Foundation in Dermapathology

Skin biopsy interpretation becomes far easier once you stop memorising individual diagnoses and start recognising patterns. This course introduces dermatopathology through the reaction pattern approach, moving from normal skin histology and basic terminology to the major inflammatory patterns, drug reactions, infections, adnexal tumours, perforating disorders and histiocytoses. Every module is built around what you actually see on the slide, the diagnostic clues that separate look-alike entities, and the clinical correlation that gives the histology its meaning. The course is designed for postgraduate and DNB pathology students, practising general pathologists, and dermatologists who want a structured, practical foundation in dermatopathology

Course Overview

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise normal skin histology, understand the types of skin biopsy, and choose the right stains for the question being asked
  • Use the correct dermatopathology terminology to describe and report skin biopsies
  • Apply a pattern based approach to inflammatory skin disease: lichenoid, psoriasiform, spongiotic, vesiculobullous, granulomatous and vasculopathic reactions, and panniculitis
  • Identify the diagnostic clues that distinguish common look-alike entities within each pattern
  • Recognise cutaneous mucinosis, cutaneous drug reactions, and the histological patterns of skin infections and infestations
  • Classify and diagnose tumours of the epidermal appendages, and recognise perforating disorders and histiocytoses
  • Build a systematic diagnostic approach that integrates histology with clinical findings, and test your progress through structured assessments

Course Highlights

  • Pattern based approach to skin biopsy, taught from normal histology through 18 focused topics
  • Emphasis on diagnostic clues and look-alikes, with clinical correlation throughout
  • Pre-course assessment to benchmark your starting point, plus four progressive assessments to consolidate learning
  • Taught by a dermatopathologist with fellowship training in Hamburg, Germany and over two decades of academic and diagnostic experience
  • Certificate upon successful completion
